Most of us treat black pepper as a single commodity, but in reality, there are over 75 cultivated varieties in India alone. Just like grapes for wine, the variety of the pepper vine determines the flavor, heat, and aroma of the spice.
1. Karimunda
The "King of Wayanad Pepper." This is the most popular traditional variety in Kerala. It is known for its high yield and small to medium-sized berries. The flavor is intense, and it produces a high amount of essential oil. If you want that classic, sharp pepper taste, this is it.
2. Panniyur Series
Developed by the Panniyur Pepper Research Station, these are hybrid varieties designed for high yield.
- Panniyur-1: The world's first hybrid pepper. It produces long spikes and very large berries. It performs exceptionally well in open sunlight.
- Panniyur-5: Specifically developed for shade tolerance, making it perfect for intercropping in coffee plantations like ours.
3. Neelamundi
A favorite among organic farmers. It is highly resistant to diseases and drought. The berries are large and heavy, turning a beautiful orange-red when ripe. It has a slightly more fruity undertone compared to the sharp heat of Karimunda.
4. Jeerakamundi
Named because its small leaves resemble cumin (Jeerakam) seeds. It is a smaller vine but produces berries with a unique, distinct aroma that is prized by connoisseurs.
At Everghat, we cultivate a mix of traditional Karimunda for flavor and Panniyur for size, ensuring you get the best of both worlds in every packet.
